Orel Brodt's Art Portfolio

I have defined myself as an artist from the moment I could say “paintbrush.” By the age of seven, I already had my paintings exhibited and decided I was going to dedicate my life to art. Art is my form of expression, emotion, personality, and point of view. Since I was young I always appreciated the creation of an image from a blank canvas. The mere fact that as an artist I can create imagery based on my thought process enthralls me.
Labyrinth 2
Acrylic and Pencil on Wood and Paper

Early 2011
This piece was for a project for our schools Labyrinth Showcase. A Labyrinth is “an intricate combination of paths or passages in which it  is difficult to find one’s way or to reach the exit.” This girl represents the rich and spoiled with her fur coat. She lives in a life of luxury and material goods. This piece is the opposite of the last one, showing a girl who is stuck in a work full of material desires.

Watch Your Back
Acrylic on Canvas
H,18 in  W, 24 in
Mid 2011
We often are told to “watch our backs,” because our back is our weakest point. In this piece i wanted to exemplify the back as being a vulnerable spot on our body. I place we cannot see and is there exposed. I wanted the layer of the body to been and paid close attention to detail to the spine and shoulder blades.

Anatomical Connections

Pen and Watercolor

All artworks have a dimension of 27.5 by 19.5 inches

Throughout 2011

This Body of Work Represents my concentration of anatomical connections. Every Part of our body is connected through different organs and systems that physically create the human form. I am looking deep within the body and taking a look at these various connections and highlighting key pieces to this complex puzzle of the human body. Every Piece has crosshatched lines in the background which represent neurological impulses. These impulses tell our body what to do and how to function and are a key component in every function our body does. These are the beginning of what i hope to be a twelve piece concentration. These Pieces are all done with Watercolor and pen.

Dilemma

Oil Pastel and Linseed Oil

November and December 2011

Dimensions an be seen when you click on the picture

African people face many dilemmas everyday. The continent has the highest poverty rates and the highest rate of disease. This mini concentration was created to highlight some of these issues that must be taken care of. When I see images of thse people, my heart melts. I see more expression, more pain in these people then i care to bear. I wanted to express emotion and texture above all other features in my work. I wanted the emotions of these people to come through and tough the viewer.

AIS benefit fashion show poster image (without the writing)
The process for this picture was amazing. I cover Yael in Vaseline then slowly applied boxes of glitter throughout her upper body and face. This image was worth the hours of cleaning afterwords.

Lady in Blue
Acrylic on Wood
H, 22.5 in W, 21 in
Mid 2011
Women are constantly worried about an idealized beauty within this modern society. Girls are highly effected by the images of beauty that are engraved in their brains. Many girls today fight eating disorders in order to stay thin, a feature they see as “good looking.” I wanted to highlight this struggle through the color palate and the harsh lines found in this figure. We see the bones through the skin and feel the torture of beauty ever day. We wake up brush our hair do our makeup get dressed and more. Everyday we fight to be as beautiful as we can, The blue represents the sadness and the struggle.

Fetal Position
H=19.5 in W=23.5 in
Acrylic on Canvas
Summer 2011
This piece is an acrylic on canvas. It shows how during your sleep one shows true emotions. The fetal position is associated with the womb and the necessity for protection. The face portrays emotions which one goes through while dreaming, because that is when one truly becomes one with their subconscious. I was going for a realistic quality within my piece to show that people really do go through these things during their sleep even if they do not recall their dreams during their waking hours.

Nude Life Drawing
H=23.5 in  W= 33 in
Charcoal on Paper
Summer 2011
This is piece was done purely for study. I wanted to practice my life drawing skills. I started by placing a light gray across the entire page and taking away the color with an eraser before i added any dark marks. I wanted to portray realism and give the man the thoughtful rugged expression that he portrayed. I used mostly vine charcoal until the end when i added details with condensed charcoal.

Tree Bark
H,18 in W,10 in
Water color and Pen
Summer 2011
This piece is pen over watercolor. My process was simply to show technique versus concept. I wanted to show my ability to work in pen and make my mistakes part of my final image. I did however like the idea that the bark showed the life of the tree. For example as people grow different experiences “scar” them leaving an everlasting impact on who they are and how they think. This has the same concept as the bark, which shows what the tree has been through during its life.
